Philippines Medicinal Herbal Plants and its Uses


What is medicinal plant? These are the plants that can help us to heal disease.

In the Philippines there are a lot of medicinal plants that can be found. They assure that it is safe and effective. The Department of Health in the Philippines approved these samples of medicinal plants.
There are many kinds of medicinal plants in the Philippines that can be used for different illnesses.

Here are the usually used medicinal plants: Medical researchers discovered that;

Ampalaya (bitter gourd/ melon) (scientific name momordica charantia) it is used to heal diabetes and now for HIV. Ampalaya according to the research of its effectiveness it has been revealed to be effective to cure diabetes because it can enhance the production of beta cells in the pancreas and it can develop the body’s ability to produce insulin. Ampalaya is said to be one of the most excellent medicinal plant in the Philippines.

 Tanglad (lemon grass) is used for herbal teas and herbal soaps. It is identified to treat digestion, for stomach troubles and to decrease fever. Lemon Grass from Africa and Asia is used for cuisine, therapeutic and cosmetics. Its leaves are used for food flavoring for fish and poultry. Its natural oil is for their medicinal uses.

Pinya (Pineapple), its juice leaves is good for intestinal animal parasite. Ripe fruit is good for dyspepsia and digestion. The juice of the ripe fruit is good for urine flow, digestion and cooling. Pinya’s nutritional purposes it is a good source of calcium, iron, Vitamin A, B, and C.

Another kind of “power herb” in the Philippines is called luya (ginger) it is known to be a very effective medicinal herbal plant. Luya can sooth the stomach, digestion, cramping and facilitates breakdown of food in the stomach. It is also effective to for nausea, vomiting and it is also known to treat heart disease, migraines, stroke, cough, dizziness, fever, viral infections and kidney stones.

Lagundi is also common in the Philippines. Its root is known to treat variety of diseases: dyspepsia, rheumatism and worms. Its flower is used for diarrhea, cholera, fever, and liver problems. Its leaves are used for coughs and asthmas.

Banaba is one more kind of medicinal plant in the Philippines. Its flower, bark and leaves can facilitate bowel movements. Roots are useful for variety of stomach problems. It has the ability to lower the blood pressure. Decocions of leaves and flower can be used for fever.

Bayabas(Guava), its bark is used for diarrhea of the children. The fruit is good for the high blood pressure, diabetes and asthma. Bayabas is known to have the best concentration of vitamin C in the Philippines.Oregano its juice can treat dyspepsia, asthmas, cough and bronchitis.

 Doctors in the Philippines prescribed the sambong the dissolution of kidney stones. It is used for tea and can be used for coughs. Sambong is the common used medicinal plant in the Philippines.
There are also medicinal plants used by Filipinos to treat cough and sore throats.

Cough is cause by the respiratory tract infection and it can be cause by choking, smoking, asthmas and air pollution.

The most regular herbal plant used for coughs in the Philippines is lagundi. Lagundi is good for asthmas also.  Lagundi’s other parts are also functional for other kinds of ailments.

Oregano is an herbal plant that also excellent for treating cough. It contains the compounds anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and antiviral properties. Its leaves should be boiled and let the person with cough drink the extract.
Mansanilya is also helpful for coughs, to treat or avoid coughs. Used the flower and boiled the chopped dried leaves and flower. ½ cup a day every four hours.

Kantutay roots are used for tuberculosis coughs. Boil one cup of chopped fresh leaves and flowers in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes. ½ cup three times a day

Alagaw is a tree that can be found in the Philippines. It is already considered as a drug by Filipinos. It is effective for loosen phlegm and relieve coughs. Alagaw also benefits to tuberculosis and headaches. Alagaw is another great herbal medicine in the Philippines to relief coughs and tuberculosis.

There’s nothing to lose if we try using alternative medicine. It is proven by health departments that it is safe and effective. No harmful side effects. It can also save money, because buying modern medicine is costly.
